The Archaeological Museum of Santorini

The Archaeological Museum of Santorini is located in the center of Fira and reveals the long history of the island. The building occupied was built in 1960 by the Ministry of Public Works to replace the earlier one which was collapsed during the earthquake of 1956. In its halls it hosts collections of sculptures and inscriptions from the Archaic to the Roman period, including pottery and clay figurines from the Geometric to the Hellenistic period.
The most important exhibits are amphora of Thira with its geometric decoration which dates from the start of 7th century BC, the great volcanic stone (tracheitis) weighing 480 kilos, and many finds from the excavations in the cemetery of Ancient Thira, as amphora and pottery objects, and ancient kouroi.
