Akrotiri is at the southwestern tip of the island at a distance of 15 km away from Fira. It is well known for the prehistoric settlement which was discovered during the excavations.Acrotiri was one of the 'kastelia' or fortresses of the island where the houses were built suitably for the purpose of protecting from pirate raids.
